ORCHESTRAL MANOEUVRES IN THE NORTH is a short documentary about a unique visit of the Munich Chamber Orchestra (MKO) to Pyongyang, North Korea. The Goethe-Institut Korea  arranged this cross-cultural encounter to one of the most internationally isolated places in the world. Nils Clauss was kindly invited to join and document this special event in form of a short documentary.

“Freunde von Freunden” (FvF) is an international interview magazine that portrays people of diverse creative and cultural backgrounds in their homes and within their daily working environments. For Léa Bouchat’s interview with Min Jun Park, Nils Clauss was invited to photograph this leading Korean musical artist, who by the name of DJ Soulscape creates an eclectic blend of old and new music.

Min Jun Park recently released music that pays homage directly to old, forgotten Korean music from the 1960s and 70s. This sound was heavily influenced by American music when the US Armed Forces were based in Seoul after the Korean War and was later suppressed by government crackdowns, thereby pushing Korea’s collective memory of its bold music history underground. In a society where the majority of the young population listens to Korean pop, Min Jun has succeeded in raising awareness of this forgotten music era. In the hope of refreshing the Seoul music scene he started a DJ collective called 360 Sounds.

LOSE AGAINST YOU is a song by Austrian singer/songwriter Nana D. Director Max von Lux teamed up with Nils Clauss as a cinematographer for the music video shoot. Entering the 15th Filmacademy Vienna Filmfestival 2013, the 10th Crossing Europe Filmfestival 2013 and the 10th Vienna Independent Shorts Filmfestival 2013, this collaboration of the two filmmakers has proven to be successful. Great to hear also that today the music video additionally has been nominated to compete with 13 other contenders for the Best Austrian Music Video at the Vienna Independent Shorts Filmfestival 2013 on 1st of June 2013.

The exhibition at ARD Hauptstadtstudio presents four photographic positions that subtly comment on themes of recent political interest – energy politics, social networks, EU organisation and global financial crisis.

Shiny fassades, dreariness of administration in black & white, deep insight into private areas, and the proverbial drop in the bucket; the photography of the four young artists shine a light on visual aspects, features and symptoms of each particular subject and let one draw conclusions on their inherent structures as well as their modes of operation and action.

The photographs invite the viewer to reflect upon in which – mainly visually distinguished – framework social processes happen and how they and their structures influence our behaviour and perception.
