Nils Clauss is an award-winning German cinematographer, editor and photographer, who has lived in Seoul since late 2005. After studying Cinematography & Visual Culture in Germany, Australia, Hong Kong and South Korea, he works on both film and photography projects with an emphasis on urban space and architecture as the main theme.
As a filmmaker Nils Clauss has recently completed shooting a feature film called FINDING JOY (which entered various international film festivals) and also various award winning music videos all in collaboration with Irish filmmaker Neil Dowling. Their SENIOR LIVING music video for Norwegian Band Royksopp has been screened in the acclaimed Saatchi & Saatchi New Directors’ Showcase at Cannes Lions Awards 2011 and also entered the UK Music Video Awards the same year.
His latest photography projects include URBAN NATURE and ZUGZWANG. URBAN NATURE won the acclaimed European Architectural Photography Prize 2011. The series explores the influences Korea‘s rapid urbanization has had on the destruction of natural landscapes, whereas ZUGZWANG questions the redevelopment zones in the metropolitan area of Seoul.
Generally speaking, one of the primary interests of the photographer is in illustrating the different rhythms of life in South Korean cities compared with European and other Western cities.
In cooperation with Neil Dowling, Nils Clauss runs a production company called CONTENTed FILMS. Together they are also represented by the London based production company NTSH. As a photographer Clauss is represented by Berlin based artist agency Uncommon Place.
